On Sunday, an 18-year-old Sikh devotee from Punjab, Gurpreet Singh of Kale village in Amritsar district, died after slipping into a 100-metre-deep ditch near Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. He was part of a 90-member group visiting the shrine. Police said Gurpreet deviated from the main footpath and took a closed, unsafe old trail, leading to the fatal fall. Upon receiving the alert, police, SDRF, and other rescue agencies arrived at the spot and recovered his body. Authorities had earlier closed the damaged path due to safety risks.
