The District Magistrate of Eastern West Khasi Hills has banned the manufacture, import, sale, and use of plastic carry bags below 120 microns under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023. This move aligns with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, to enforce the nationwide single-use plastic ban. Authorities warn of strict action for violations, though appeals are allowed. Over two metric tonnes of banned plastic items have been seized during surprise inspections this year. Special task forces are actively removing illegal plastics and promoting eco-friendly alternatives like cloth and jute bags to support sustainable practices in Meghalaya.
