Arunachal Pradesh is set to host India’s first fully indigenous geothermal power plant, a 50-kilowatt facility in Tawang district, operating at a low temperature of 68°C. Spearheaded by the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) and Shriram Institute for Industrial Research (SIIR), the plant aims to serve over 5,000 residents. Funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy with over ₹10 crore, the project uses indigenous bipolar process technology suitable for high-altitude areas. Structural mapping is complete, and trials have been successful. Chief Minister Pema Khandu hailed it as a pioneering step toward sustainable energy in the Northeast.
