Two-time Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier was seriously injured by a rockfall on Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range at 5,700m altitude. A helicopter rescue was ruled out due to harsh weather and difficult terrain. A ground rescue team of three Americans and one German mountaineer has been launched. Dahlmeier, 31, was struck by falling rocks and remains unreachable due to continued rockfall risk. A helicopter spotted her but found no signs of life. An experienced mountaineer, she had climbed Great Trango Tower earlier. Dahlmeier retired in 2019, became a commentator, and is also a certified mountain and ski guide.
