Facing growing threats from China, Taiwan is rapidly developing a domestic drone industry as part of its "porcupine strategy" to deter invasion. The government is fostering innovation, partnering with private companies, and targeting mass production of dual-use and military-grade drones by 2028. Inspired by Ukraine’s use of drones, Taiwan aims to become a regional drone hub, though challenges remain, including reliance on Chinese parts, limited combat experience, and supply chain issues. Despite increased defense spending and efforts to scale up production, experts warn Taiwan must move faster and smarter to build a sustainable, self-reliant drone force before 2027.
