The Odisha government has allowed women to work night shifts in factories, shops, and commercial establishments, with mandatory written consent. Guidelines require at least three women on each night shift and adequate GPS-tracked transportation. Adolescent girls are prohibited from night work. Employers must provide toilets, drinking water, CCTV surveillance, and proper lighting near the workplace. The move aims to boost women’s employment opportunities. The decision follows amendments to the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956. Labour Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia emphasized consent as key, while opposition BJD criticized the policy, accusing the government of shifting responsibility to women.
