The Gauhati High Court has stayed the Uriamghat eviction drive in Assam’s Golaghat district until August 14, following petitions from around 75 residents. The petitioners argued that the land hasn’t been legally classified and they’ve received government benefits, including PMAY homes and electricity. The court asked the Assam government to submit an affidavit clarifying the land’s legal status, while petitioners must provide supporting documents. Advocate A.R. Bhuyan highlighted that no proper land demarcation was done and the eviction notice gave only a seven-day window. The next hearing is scheduled for August 14, offering temporary relief to the residents.
