Brazil Files Complaint with WTO Against Trump’s Tariff Hike

Brazil has filed a petition with the World Trade Organization (WTO) seeking consultations over steep 50% tariffs imposed by the US under President Trump, citing retaliation for Brazil’s prosecution of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The tariffs affect over a third of Brazil’s exports to the US. Trump criticized Brazil’s handling of Bolsonaro’s alleged coup attempt, calling it political persecution. Brazilian President Lula condemned the tariffs as a threat to national sovereignty and US interference. Lula vowed to strengthen ties with BRICS nations and reform domestic policies, while warning that global consumers will suffer from Trump’s increasingly protectionist trade agenda.
