Kerala Governor Rajendran Vishwanath Arlekar, citing a 2022 UGC circular, directed all state universities to observe August 14 as “Partition Horror Day” through seminars, dramas, and public events highlighting the Partition’s impact. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opposed the move, calling it unconstitutional and an attempt to push the Sangh Parivar’s divisive agenda on campuses. While other states mark the day, Left-ruled Kerala has not complied before. Vijayan accused the Sangh Parivar of undermining Independence Day, noting their absence in the freedom struggle. The UGC’s directive followed PM Modi’s 2021 call to commemorate Partition victims through exhibitions and public participation.
