India Monitoring China’s 1986 Brahmaputra Dam Project

China has reportedly begun building a mega dam on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper Brahmaputra) in Tibet, first revealed in 1986. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it is closely monitoring the project due to potential impacts on South Asia’s ecology, water security, and livelihoods. Located in a seismically fragile Himalayan zone, the dam poses risks of disrupted flows, biodiversity loss, and floods. India has urged China for transparency, consultations with downstream nations, and hydrological data sharing. Despite China’s renewable energy claims, India fears strategic control over water resources. Diplomatic talks on the issue remain ongoing.
