Ex-Peruvian President Jailed Amid Corruption Allegations

A Peruvian judge has ordered former President Martin Vizcarra to five months of pre-trial detention over bribery allegations during his tenure as Moquegua governor 11 years ago, citing him as a flight risk. Vizcarra denies the charges, calling them political persecution, and had planned to run for president in 2026. He is the fifth ex-president jailed in Peru, joining Alejandro Toledo, Ollanta Humala, and Pedro Castillo at a special facility in Lima. Critics accuse Congress of politically motivated impeachments. The facility previously housed Alberto Fujimori, pardoned controversially in 2023. Recent amnesty for officials accused of Shining Path abuses drew condemnation from rights groups.
