The Union Environment Ministry has proposed an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Deepar Beel Wildlife Sanctuary in Guwahati under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The draft covers 38.84 sq. km, extending 25.294 meters to 5 km from the sanctuary boundary in various directions. The ESZ aims to protect the wetland and its wildlife, regulating construction, tourism, and banning polluting industries and mining. Deepar Beel, Assam’s only Ramsar site, hosts over 150 bird species, elephants, reptiles, fishes, amphibians, and aquatic life. Threats include a railway line, encroachment, and pollution. Public objections can be submitted within 60 days.
