The Rajya Sabha on Monday passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, through voice vote after a walkout by the Opposition. The Bill, already cleared by the Lok Sabha, replaces the outdated Indian Ports Act, 1908, aiming to modernise port regulations, ensure global compliance, and promote integrated port development. Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the Bill followed wide consultations, decriminalises certain offences, introduces transparency in tariffs, and addresses pollution, safety, security, and dispute resolution. Supporting MPs stressed ports’ role in India’s economic growth. Debate saw political exchanges, including AIADMK’s drug-smuggling allegations, which were objected to and expunged.
