A tragic incident at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) occurred when three newborns were placed on one ICU bed during phototherapy, leading to the death of a baby girl due to head injuries. Despite available equipment, staff negligence caused the mishap, while two other infants were discharged safely. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressing grief and anger, termed it “gross negligence” and ordered a high-level probe by a three-member panel. The duty nurse was suspended, and the CM directed an apology to the family. He also announced SOPs for all medical colleges to prevent such incidents in the future.
