The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the procurement of 97 LCA Mk-1A light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force, adding to the 83 jets ordered in 2021. Built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), these indigenous fighters will help offset the IAF’s shrinking squadron strength following the phasing out of MiG-21s and other ageing jets. HAL, powered by GE Aerospace’s F404 engines, plans to deliver 16 jets annually, aiming to complete all deliveries by 2030. The timely induction of Tejas Mk-1A is seen as crucial for maintaining operational capability and strengthening India’s indigenous defence manufacturing.
