In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a military prosecutor has demanded the death penalty for former President Joseph Kabila, who is being tried in absentia. Prosecutor General Lucien Rene Likulia accuses Kabila of treason, homicide, torture, insurrection, and war crimes linked to the M23 rebel group. Charges include the violent occupation of Goma earlier this year. Kabila dismissed the case as political oppression, while his party called it relentless persecution of the opposition. Although the DRC lifted its moratorium on the death penalty in 2023, executions have not yet resumed, leaving the trial’s outcome highly contentious.
