US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired Lieutenant General Jeffrey Kruse, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, after his report contradicted President Donald Trump’s claim that June airstrikes severely damaged Iran’s nuclear sites, instead finding only limited setbacks. Two Navy leaders, Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore and Rear Admiral Milton Sands, were also dismissed. The firings are part of Trump’s broader purge of top Pentagon officials since starting his second term, raising concerns of politicisation. Trump previously removed the Joint Chiefs chairman and other senior commanders. Critics say intelligence is being treated as a loyalty test rather than a safeguard.
