Australia has rejected claims that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu influenced its decision to expel Iran’s ambassador. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said credible intelligence showed Tehran directed antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. Israel’s spokesperson David Mencer praised Australia but suggested Netanyahu’s intervention spurred action, after he accused Albanese of betraying Israel by moving to recognise Palestine. Iran denied involvement, calling Australia’s allegations politically motivated and warning of reciprocal measures. Israel’s embassy highlighted the threat to Australia, while the Jewish Council expressed shock at Iran’s alleged role but urged politicians and media not to politicise the attacks against the community.
