The US has imposed a steep 50% tariff on many Indian products, doubling an existing 25% duty as President Donald Trump seeks to penalise India for purchasing Russian oil. The move affects $48.2 billion worth of exports, including garments, gems, footwear, furniture, and chemicals, though sectors like pharmaceuticals and chips remain exempt. Indian officials fear job losses and slower growth, while New Delhi explores alternative markets through FTAs with Australia, UAE, UK, and the EU. Despite trade tensions, leaders stress India-US ties remain strong, with hopes of boosting bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 through an upcoming trade deal.
