The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a vehicle scrappage policy to reduce air pollution, particularly in urban areas like Byrnihat, which has recorded an AQI of 302. Announced by government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh, the policy targets 13,000 old vehicles—5,000 government and 8,000 private—that are unfit for the roads. Initially, it will focus on scrapping 15-year-old government vehicles, while private ones will only be removed if they are 35 years or older. With Shillong alone having over 2.76 lakh registered vehicles, the policy aims to address growing pollution concerns and improve air quality across the state.
