Mali’s military government has suspended all political party activities “until further notice,” citing “public order” concerns, following a rare pro-democracy rally. The decree, signed by transitional president General Assimi Goita, affects all political associations and comes shortly after the repeal of a law regulating parties, seen as a step toward their dissolution. In response, a coalition of parties demanded an end to military rule by December 31 and a return to constitutional order. Hundreds protested in Bamako last Saturday. Goita, who took power through coups in 2020 and 2021, may now serve a renewable five-year term, per a recent conference.
