Rescue efforts continued in South Africa as over 200 miners remained trapped for a second day at the Kloof gold mine, one of Sibanye-Stillwater’s deepest sites. The miners were caught due to a “shaft incident,” but all were reported safe and gathered at a sub-shaft assembly point with food provided. The company advised workers to stay put until it was safe to move to the surface. Reports varied on the number trapped, ranging from 260 to 289. The National Union of Mineworkers criticized the company for delayed public disclosure. The mine is located 60 km west of Johannesburg and taps some of the world’s deepest gold reserves.
