Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) as unfair to India, claiming it restricted the country's rightful use of its share of river water. Speaking in Gandhinagar, he highlighted that for 60 years, sediment gates of J&K dams remained shut, reducing reservoir capacity to just 2–3%. Modi emphasized that merely suspending the treaty after the Pahalgam massacre caused panic in Pakistan. He indicated India may renegotiate treaty terms, especially the dispute settlement mechanism, citing Pakistan’s continued use of terrorism which violates the treaty’s foundation of friendly relations. Modi also noted the impact of opening dam gates.
