In a record-breaking conservation effort, 70 southern white rhinos were relocated from South Africa to Rwanda, covering over 3,400 km by truck and Boeing 747. The rhinos, moved in two groups of 35, were flown from Munywana Conservancy to Kigali, then transported to Akagera National Park. This initiative, the largest rhino translocation by air, aims to rewild over 2,000 rhinos across Africa and establish a breeding population in Rwanda. Once widespread, white rhino numbers have plummeted due to poaching. With only around 17,000 southern white rhinos left, the subspecies is “near threatened,” while the northern white rhino is critically endangered.
