The tragic murder of South African woman Olorato Mongale highlights the deep-rooted crisis of gender-based violence and toxic masculinity across Africa. Despite new laws and government initiatives, femicide remains rampant, with one woman killed every three hours in South Africa. The issue extends continent-wide, with Africa recording the world’s highest rate of partner-related femicides. Patriarchy, cultural norms, and economic inequality continue to fuel violence. Leaders and activists stress that African men must take responsibility, reject harmful traditions, and embrace a new, egalitarian model of masculinity to protect women and ensure a just, safe future for all.
