On May 31, 67-year-old Ali returned to Assam after being stranded for days in no-man’s land between India and Bangladesh. He was among over 300 Muslims "pushed back" by Indian authorities amid a crackdown on "declared foreign nationals" in Assam, where ethnic tensions over migration persist. Ali and others were taken by the BSF to the border, but Bangladesh refused them entry. Trapped in dire conditions, they faced threats and rubber bullets. After intervention by Bangladeshi locals and officials, some, including Ali, returned via Meghalaya. The crackdown intensified after a Kashmir terror attack reignited anti-Muslim sentiment in India.
