The Meghalaya government has designated three city locations to relocate over 400 eligible street vendors and is offering a ₹20,000 relocation allowance. A digital survey identified 1,400 vendors, of which 760 were eligible. In Khyndailad, 407 of 457 vendors were approved after hearings. The relocation, under the Street Vendors Act, 2014, began last week, sparking protests, including one at the secretariat gate on July 1, violating a protest ban. The move follows Meghalaya High Court orders monitoring street vending and traffic issues. Authorities plan to extend the drive citywide, aiming to balance urban order and vendors' livelihoods.
