Since 2021, Mizoram has lost over ₹963 crore due to African Swine Fever (ASF), with 68,172 pigs dead and over 10,400 families affected. First detected in Lungsen village near the Bangladesh border, ASF likely spread through imported pigs. The heaviest losses occurred in 2024 (₹336.4 crore). The government has paid ₹14.51 crore in compensation and culled 51,301 pigs to contain the disease. ASF currently affects 66 villages in three districts, impacting 1,700+ families. Officials seek an additional ₹24.94 crore in relief. Past outbreaks of PRRS (2013–2020) caused further losses of ₹10.62 crore, killing thousands of pigs.
