Mizoram Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister K Sapdanga visited New Delhi on Friday to hold crucial discussions with Union Housing, Urban Affairs and Power Minister Manohar Lal, focusing on the comprehensive development of urban infrastructure in Mizoram. The visit came in light of growing infrastructural demands in the northeastern state and the need for modern, efficient systems to support its rapidly evolving urban areas.

According to an official release, the discussions primarily revolved around the urgent necessity of upgrading urban infrastructure, particularly in relation to drainage and flood mitigation systems. With Mizoram experiencing frequent floods and related disasters during the monsoon season, the minister highlighted the importance of modernizing drainage networks to minimize damage and ensure public safety. Minister Sapdanga emphasized that the current drainage infrastructure in the towns of Mizoram is outdated and inadequate in managing the heavy rainfall that is typical of the region. He appealed for the Centre’s intervention and support in redesigning and strengthening these systems.

In addition to flood control, Minister Sapdanga also raised serious concerns about the state’s mounting challenges in solid waste management. He pointed out that urban areas in Mizoram are grappling with increasing volumes of waste, and the existing waste collection, disposal, and treatment mechanisms are under strain. He underscored the need for the Central government’s technical expertise and financial assistance to boost urban sanitation services and improve waste processing facilities. Such support, he said, is vital for maintaining public health and environmental sustainability in growing urban settlements.

Later in the day, Minister Sapdanga held a separate meeting with Union Expenditure Secretary Vuanlunmang Vualnam to discuss the status of pending fund releases from the Centre. These funds are critical for the execution of key ongoing and proposed developmental projects across Mizoram. The minister expressed concern over the delays and urged for an expedited release of the withheld financial support to avoid disruptions in project timelines. Timely availability of funds, he noted, is essential to sustain momentum in infrastructure expansion and ensure successful project outcomes.

Secretary Vualnam responded positively and assured Minister Sapdanga that he would personally take up the issue with the relevant departments. He committed to closely following up to facilitate the smooth and timely disbursal of funds to Mizoram. His assurance offered hope for quicker financial backing and renewed progress on vital state development initiatives.

Minister Sapdanga’s visit reflects Mizoram’s determined push to strengthen its urban governance and improve service delivery mechanisms across the state. With urbanization steadily increasing, the state is keen on adopting comprehensive and sustainable infrastructure solutions. The meetings signal an important step toward aligning state and central efforts to address key urban development challenges in Mizoram, including disaster preparedness, sanitation, and project funding.

Overall, the engagement with central authorities highlighted the state’s priorities and emphasized the critical role of collaboration between state and central governments in driving development and ensuring improved quality of life for urban residents in Mizoram.
