In the early hours of Thursday, a mild earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, according to reports from government officials and the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at approximately 1:36 AM, with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located near the town of Kishtwar, a mountainous region situated in the eastern part of Jammu division, which is known for its rugged terrain and vulnerability to seismic activity.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the government agency responsible for monitoring and reporting seismic activity in India, confirmed the details of the tremor. It stated that the earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres below the Earth’s surface. The precise geographical coordinates of the epicentre were recorded as 33.17 degrees north latitude and 75.87 degrees east longitude. This depth and magnitude classify the quake as minor, and it is unlikely to cause significant surface-level disruption.

Fortunately, officials reported that there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the earthquake. Moreover, there were no signs of damage to public or private infrastructure, including roads, buildings, or utility services. Residents in the region reportedly felt the tremors, though the quake was relatively mild and did not lead to any widespread panic or emergency evacuations. Local authorities remained alert and on standby to respond to any developments but confirmed that the situation was under control and normal life continued without interruption.

Kishtwar, like other districts in the region of Jammu and Kashmir, lies in a seismically active zone. The Himalayas are particularly prone to earthquakes due to the ongoing tectonic activity caused by the Indian plate pushing against the Eurasian plate. Although Thursday’s event was a low-intensity quake, it serves as a reminder of the persistent geological risks faced by people living in this part of the country. Experts have often stressed the importance of disaster preparedness and public awareness in such regions to minimize loss during stronger quakes.

Following the incident, the NCS and local disaster management authorities continued to monitor the area for any aftershocks or unusual seismic movements. While the likelihood of major aftershocks after a 3.1-magnitude earthquake is low, officials emphasized the importance of caution and advised residents to stay informed through official channels in case of future tremors.

Overall, Thursday's earthquake near Kishtwar turned out to be a minor event in terms of its intensity and impact. There were no adverse effects on life or property, and the government agencies acted swiftly to assess the situation and assure the public of their safety. The timely communication from the NCS and the absence of any reported damages helped prevent misinformation or unnecessary fear. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining readiness and urged residents to remain calm but vigilant in light of the region's seismic profile.
