During a significant day-long visit to Dibrugarh on Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a series of development projects valued at over ₹500 crore. These initiatives focus primarily on enhancing education, healthcare, and skill development infrastructure across the region.

The first major announcement came at Dibrugarh University, where the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a substantial infrastructure upgrade project worth ₹146.43 crore. This initiative is being funded under the Chief Minister’s Special Grant and the Pradhan Mantri Uchhatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA). The proposed development plan includes the construction of a girls' hostel, new academic and research blocks, a state-of-the-art library, an incubation centre, and significant upgrades to internal roadways, housing quarters, the sports complex, and gymnasium facilities. The CM stated that these developments would elevate the university to its next phase of growth by enhancing both academic and extracurricular capabilities. He emphasized that students from diverse academic streams would ultimately benefit from these improvements.

Following the university visit, the Chief Minister proceeded to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), another important stop on his itinerary. There, he laid the foundation stone for a ₹357-crore project, which includes the construction of new residential quarters for faculty members and a hostel for students. The development, which spans over 196 acres, is intended to significantly improve the living conditions for medical professionals and students alike. CM Sarma highlighted that this major upgrade aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare infrastructure in the state, especially in premier institutions like AMCH.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister travelled to Naharkatia, where he launched and formally handed over multiple infrastructure projects with a combined worth of ₹130 crore. These included new administrative buildings, expanded school campuses, a road overbridge, and a modern hockey stadium. A key highlight of this phase was the inauguration of the Tata Centre of Excellence located on the ITI Naharkatia campus.

During the ceremony, Sarma officially handed over the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) to the Department of Skill, Employment, and Entrepreneurship. This move signifies the government’s strong focus on industry-oriented skill training and youth development. The Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting vocational education and industry-linked training opportunities as a way to empower Assam’s youth and make them more employable in competitive sectors.

Overall, CM Sarma’s visit and the announcements mark a significant investment in the state’s development, particularly in upper Assam. These projects underscore the Assam government’s broader vision for inclusive growth by investing in key areas like education, healthcare, and skill development. The integrated approach is expected to have a lasting impact on the region’s socio-economic development and will contribute to building a skilled, healthy, and educated society.
