A rescue mission was set in motion on Wednesday for Laura Dahlmeier, the two-time Olympic biathlon champion from Germany, who was seriously injured after being struck by falling rocks on Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. The accident occurred around midday on Monday at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet). Dahlmeier’s climbing partner managed to alert authorities after reaching safety.

Due to extreme weather conditions and the difficult terrain, helicopter evacuation was deemed impossible. Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior local official in the Ghanche district, stated that the altitude and challenging environment ruled out aerial rescue. As a result, a ground rescue mission was launched, comprising a four-member team that includes three American and one German mountaineer. This team was coordinated by Shipton Trek & Tours Pakistan, the expedition organizers.

Dahlmeier, aged 31, is reported to have been hit by a rockfall, and her team noted that no one has been able to physically reach her yet because of ongoing rockfall threats and the remoteness of the location. A reconnaissance helicopter was able to fly over the area and spotted her, confirming that the experienced mountaineer appeared to be seriously injured. However, the rescue team noted that there were “no signs of life” detected from the aerial view.

Muhammad Ali, a local disaster management official, reported that the region has experienced extremely harsh weather conditions over the past week, including rain, strong winds, and dense clouds. These adverse conditions have significantly hampered rescue efforts.

Dahlmeier is a highly skilled and experienced mountaineer. She had been in Pakistan since the end of June and had successfully ascended the Great Trango Tower prior to the accident. The International Biathlon Union released a statement expressing support and concern for Dahlmeier and her family, stating hope for positive news.

During her athletic career, Dahlmeier achieved notable success, winning seven world championship gold medals. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, she made history by becoming the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit events in the same Games.

In 2019, at just 25 years old, Dahlmeier retired from professional biathlon competition. Following her retirement, she transitioned to working as a sports commentator for the German broadcaster ZDF, specifically covering biathlon events. In addition to broadcasting, she pursued her passion for mountaineering more seriously and became a certified mountain and ski guide. She is also an active member of a mountain rescue organization, highlighting her deep commitment and expertise in high-altitude climbing.

The ongoing rescue operation remains difficult due to environmental hazards and the altitude at which the incident occurred. The mountaineering community and fans worldwide await further updates, hoping that the ground team will reach Dahlmeier and provide the necessary aid. The situation remains tense, with concerns about her survival growing due to the severe conditions and lack of signs of life. The incident has drawn attention globally, given Dahlmeier’s prominence both in winter sports and mountaineering circles.
