Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Assam on August 29, 2025, for a significant set of political and ceremonial engagements, as announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday. The central purpose of Shah’s visit is the inauguration of the newly constructed Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, the official residence of the Governor of Assam. This newly built structure is expected to reflect modern architecture while also incorporating elements of Assamese heritage, making it a landmark addition to the state capital.

Apart from this key ceremonial event, Amit Shah’s itinerary also includes participation in a convention of newly elected Panchayat members affiliated with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). These members, who have recently won their respective elections across various districts in Assam, will be felicitated during a special programme organized in Guwahati. The felicitation event is being seen as a celebration of NDA's resounding victory in the recent panchayat elections, which significantly reinforced the ruling alliance’s stronghold in Assam’s grassroots politics.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while speaking to the media, emphasized the political significance of the Home Minister's visit. He stated, "On 29th August, the Union Home Minister will visit Guwahati. He will inaugurate the new Raj Bhavan. NDA got a good victory in the Panchayat elections, and all the Panchayat members of NDA will hold a convention on 29th August in Guwahati. The Union Home Minister will attend the convention as the chief guest." The event is not only meant to honour the newly elected representatives but also to boost morale and reinforce the NDA’s commitment to strengthening local governance and rural development across the state.

Later in the evening of August 29, Amit Shah is also scheduled to inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations of Golap Borbora, a towering political figure in Assam’s history. Golap Borbora was the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam, representing the Janata Party, and served from 1978 to 1979. He is remembered for his grassroots connect and principled stand against corruption, as well as for his contributions to regional identity politics and economic reforms during a crucial time in Assam’s history. His centenary event is expected to draw attention from leaders across the political spectrum and is being organized as a tribute to his enduring legacy.

Following the completion of these engagements, Amit Shah will return to New Delhi later the same day. His visit is being viewed as both politically symbolic and strategically important, coming ahead of future electoral cycles and as a boost to the BJP-led government's outreach in Assam. The confluence of governance, party organization, and historical commemoration during his visit underscores the BJP’s efforts to blend development with regional pride and political consolidation in the Northeast.
