Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, on August 1, announced a series of major developments in the state’s healthcare and medical education sectors. At the 21st foundation day celebration of the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), he revealed the state government's intention to introduce superspeciality courses at AGMC, aiming to strengthen advanced medical education and healthcare delivery in Tripura.
Saha highlighted that AGMC has already successfully implemented postgraduate medical courses, and now the government is taking the next step to expand academic excellence by exploring superspeciality programs. These new courses are expected to enhance the capabilities of AGMC and create more specialized medical professionals within the state.
In a significant initiative toward hospital management and administration, the Chief Minister also announced that Tripura will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AIIMS, New Delhi. The MoU will facilitate training programs for doctors and healthcare staff in hospital management, enabling more efficient administration and service delivery. This decision follows a recent visit by a team from AIIMS led by Director N Srinivas to GBP Hospital and AGMC. The team assessed current services and provided recommendations, based on which the MoU will be finalized.
Further underscoring Tripura’s medical advancements, CM Saha stated that three kidney transplants have already been conducted successfully at the GBP Hospital-AGMC campus. The government is also planning to introduce liver and heart transplant facilities, which will significantly benefit patients who would otherwise have to travel outside the state for critical surgeries. These developments aim to make Tripura a self-reliant state in high-end medical care and reduce the financial and logistical burden on patients and families.
Another major infrastructure development is the construction of a 100-bed modern eye hospital at Khejurbagan in Agartala. The site for the hospital has already been finalized, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is nearing completion. The government has allocated necessary funding for this project in the current financial year’s budget. This hospital will address the growing need for specialized ophthalmic care in the region.
In the field of dental education, the Agartala Government Dental College (AGDC) is also poised for expansion. CM Saha announced that the college will soon launch postgraduate courses in dentistry, which will strengthen dental healthcare services and education in the state.
These combined efforts reflect the Tripura government’s focused strategy to elevate the state's healthcare infrastructure and medical education system. The introduction of superspeciality courses, collaboration with AIIMS for hospital management training, establishment of transplant and eye care facilities, and enhancement of dental education mark a transformative phase in Tripura’s healthcare journey. The initiatives aim to reduce healthcare inequality, attract and retain talent, and ensure high-quality medical services are available within the state.
