Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on September 8, 2025, to officially inaugurate the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary cultural icon of Assam and India. The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 1 during a press briefing, emphasizing the significance of the visit in honoring the legacy of Bhupen Hazarika.
As per the official itinerary, the Prime Minister’s visit will begin with his arrival at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat district, where he will inaugurate a major infrastructure project — a bio-ethanol plant constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,200 crore. This plant, one of the most ambitious projects in the region, is expected to contribute significantly to the government’s larger goals of renewable energy and sustainable development by producing ethanol from organic sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Following the inauguration at NRL, the Prime Minister will proceed to Mangaldoi in Darrang district, where a series of crucial infrastructure projects will be unveiled. These include the formal inauguration of the Guwahati Ring Road, which is expected to play a key role in decongesting traffic in the capital region and boosting connectivity across the state. Additionally, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a strategically important bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Kuruwa and Narengi, thereby improving accessibility in and around Guwahati.
Another highlight of his visit to Mangaldoi will be the laying of the foundation stone for the Mangaldoi Medical College Hospital. The establishment of this medical college hospital is aimed at addressing the healthcare needs of residents in Darrang and neighboring districts while strengthening medical education infrastructure in Assam.
In the evening, Prime Minister Modi will return to Guwahati, where he will formally launch the birth centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika, who is revered not just in Assam but across India for his contributions to music, literature, cinema, and social consciousness. The event is expected to include cultural performances, tributes, and announcements related to year-long programs commemorating Hazarika's contributions to the arts and Assamese identity.
Apart from the Prime Minister’s visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also scheduled to be in Assam ahead of the PM’s arrival. On August 29, Amit Shah will visit Guwahati to inaugurate the newly constructed Raj Bhavan, an architectural addition to the administrative infrastructure of the state. During his visit, Shah will also attend a special convention of newly elected NDA panchayat members. The event will feature a felicitation ceremony honoring these grassroots representatives for their electoral victories and roles in governance.
Both high-profile visits reflect the Centre’s continued political and developmental focus on the northeastern state of Assam, underlining initiatives to boost infrastructure, honor regional heritage, and strengthen local governance.
