Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Unveils Infrastructure Boost with Foot Overbridges and LGBI Terminal Update

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a significant urban infrastructure push for Guwahati, with a focus on pedestrian safety and enhanced international connectivity. On Wednesday, the Chief Minister declared that five new foot overbridges will be constructed along the heavily trafficked Khanapara–Jalukbari stretch — one of the city’s most congested road corridors.

The foot overbridges are aimed at ensuring safer road crossings for pedestrians and reducing the frequency of road accidents, which have been a persistent concern in the area. The project is also expected to ease overall traffic movement and improve transport management in this critical city corridor, which connects key educational institutions, government offices, and residential areas.

This announcement came during CM Sarma’s inspection of several ongoing infrastructure projects across Guwahati, part of the state government’s broader effort to modernize urban amenities and make the city more livable, efficient, and commuter-friendly. The overbridges will be equipped with modern amenities, including escalators and elevators, to ensure accessibility for people of all age groups and physical abilities.

Earlier on the same day, Chief Minister Sarma visited the under-construction international terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation from Bhutan, reflecting the growing regional cooperation and shared interest in enhancing connectivity across the eastern Himalayan region.

Following the site inspection, CM Sarma addressed the media and stated that the new terminal is expected to be fully operational by the end of November 2025. The ambitious project is being developed as part of the government’s larger plan to position Guwahati as a major international gateway to the Northeast, and to cater to the rising air traffic demand from both domestic and international passengers.

The upcoming terminal will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure and will substantially increase the airport’s current passenger handling capacity. Designed with modern aesthetics and sustainability in mind, the terminal will also offer enhanced amenities for travelers, including automated check-in, immigration counters, advanced security systems, and a range of shopping and dining options.

CM Sarma also revealed that he intends to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the new terminal upon its completion. This move, he said, would mark a significant milestone not only for Assam but also for the entire Northeast, showcasing the region’s progress in international connectivity and aviation infrastructure.

Overall, the day’s announcements underscored the Assam government’s dual approach to infrastructure development — prioritizing both everyday urban mobility and long-term regional connectivity. While the foot overbridges aim to make daily life safer and more convenient for city residents, the international terminal at LGBI Airport is envisioned as a strategic asset to connect the Northeast with the rest of the world.

These initiatives reflect the government’s broader vision for an inclusive, connected, and future-ready Assam.
