Jharkhand BJP Chief Babulal Marandi Alleges Conspiracy to Frame Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Jharkhand BJP president and Leader of the Opposition, Babulal Marandi, has accused a senior Jharkhand police officer of orchestrating a plot to “frame” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during last year’s state assembly elections. At that time, Sarma was serving as the BJP’s in-charge for the Jharkhand polls.
The allegations were made by Marandi in a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), where he claimed that the officer had twice arranged for someone to travel to Delhi and Guwahati to carry out the plan against Sarma. Marandi asserted that evidence supporting these allegations would soon be made public, promising to personally present proof of the conspiracy.
In his statement, Marandi addressed Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren directly, questioning whether the alleged plot had been executed with his knowledge or approval. He urged Soren to publicly clarify his position on the matter. Marandi warned that if an officer could attempt such an act against a high-ranking leader like Sarma, the same person could also turn against Soren in the future for personal or political reasons.
Marandi went further, suggesting that the same group allegedly involved in the conspiracy had, in the past, tried to collect evidence against Soren himself. According to Marandi, these individuals had also sent multiple complaint letters targeting Soren to various destinations. He advised Soren to initiate an investigation into the matter using his own state agencies. Offering to cooperate, Marandi stated that he was willing to share information directly with Soren, adding a pointed remark that such revelations could help Soren “identify the snakes in his sleeve” — a metaphor implying hidden enemies within his circle.
Reacting to Marandi’s post, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that he recalled a suspicious encounter during his assignment in Jharkhand for the elections. Sarma recounted that two women had come to his office and attempted to engage him in conversation. Finding the situation suspicious, Sarma said he decided to send them away immediately.
Sarma stated that he planned to discuss the matter further with Marandi to understand the details of the allegations. He clarified that he holds no personal rivalries with anyone but acknowledged that there could be political rivalries at play.
This controversy comes against a politically charged backdrop in Jharkhand, where tensions between the BJP and the ruling coalition have been intensifying. If substantiated, Marandi’s allegations could not only strain relations between the state government and opposition but also raise questions about the role of law enforcement in electoral politics.
Marandi’s accusations, Sarma’s recollections, and the implied involvement of senior officials have the potential to spark a political storm, especially if the promised evidence is made public. For now, the matter remains one of accusation and counter-questioning, with both BJP and state government circles awaiting further developments.
