On August 8, Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen collapsed at Badharghat railway station on the outskirts of Agartala, where he was preparing to board a train to Dharmanagar in North Tripura district. He was immediately taken to Tripura Medical College (TMC) and later shifted to a private hospital in Agartala. Doctors diagnosed him with an internal brain haemorrhage, noting heavy intracranial bleeding. Sen underwent surgery and was kept under observation for 72 hours before his family decided to transfer him to Bengaluru for further treatment.
Sen’s daughter, Tara Sen, stated that only a month earlier, she and her father had visited Mysuru, Karnataka, and he was in good health at the time. She expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Manik Saha for his unwavering support, describing him as “a second father” during this crisis. She affirmed that the state government had done its best and said she would take her father to Bengaluru for advanced care. Tara also spoke about her father’s unfulfilled dreams and his political resilience, likening him to Sharad Pawar. She said that, just as Pawar continues political work despite physical challenges, her father would return to politics, resume his role as Speaker, and lead with the same determination.
Meanwhile, Sen’s son, Arijit Sen, addressed criticisms over the family’s choice to treat him at a private hospital instead of the state-run GBP Hospital. Arijit stressed that the decision was personal and made in the best interest of his father’s health. He argued that no one should politicize medical decisions, emphasizing that his father’s well-being was the top priority and rejecting any political commentary on the matter.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with other ministers, visited Sen at the private hospital. The CM remarked that Sen had appeared healthy earlier on the day of his collapse, showing no signs of illness. He praised the prompt and coordinated response of medical teams at TMC, who conducted essential procedures such as CT scans and intubation. After the family requested the transfer, a joint medical team from TMC, GBP Hospital, and the private hospital provided continuous care.
Saha highlighted that Sen was generally a healthy and fit person, and the sudden nature of his condition was unexpected. He assured that the medical teams did everything necessary to stabilize and treat the Speaker. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and several other political leaders also visited the hospital to express concern and solidarity.
The incident has drawn significant attention due to Sen’s prominent political role and the timing of the medical emergency. While the state government and opposition have shown support, the situation has also sparked minor political debate over the choice of medical facilities. However, both family members and the Chief Minister have urged people to focus on Sen’s health rather than politicizing the issue.
As of the latest updates, Biswabandhu Sen remains under medical supervision, and his family is preparing to shift him to Bengaluru for continued treatment, hopeful for his recovery and eventual return to active political life.
