Tripura's railway infrastructure has received a significant boost with the commissioning of the power supply to the Teliamura traction sub-station in Khowai district. This development will enable the operation of electric train services in the area, marking a key step forward in modernizing the state’s rail transport system. An official confirmed on Monday that this move is part of a broader initiative to transition from diesel-powered trains to electric trains, which are cleaner, more efficient, and environmentally friendly.
The commissioning of the Teliamura traction sub-station came just a day after a similar milestone was achieved with the successful commissioning of the Udaipur railway traction sub-station in Gomati district. Both these projects form part of the Northeastern Frontier Railway’s comprehensive plan to electrify railway lines in Tripura and reduce the state’s reliance on diesel locomotives. This electrification drive aims to enhance operational efficiency, cut down carbon emissions, reduce costs, and offer a better travel experience to passengers.
With the new power supply operational, Teliamura railway station is now fully equipped to handle electrified train operations. Biswajit Bose, the Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), highlighted the dual benefits of this project. He explained that it not only facilitates smoother and more efficient train services but also strengthens power stability for the communities living around the railway infrastructure. This, in turn, supports local development and improves overall energy reliability in the region.
Bose further emphasized that the initiative aligns with the central government’s broader mission to expand electric railway connectivity across the country. Electrification of railways is seen as a crucial step towards sustainable development, as it helps reduce the railways' carbon footprint while enhancing the reliability and speed of train services. The move also supports the government’s vision of modernizing transportation infrastructure, which is vital for economic growth and regional integration.
Officials from TSECL and the railway department participated in the commissioning ceremony, including Deputy General Manager Kamal Krishna Das, Senior Manager Utpal Kar, and railway official PC Meena. Their presence underscored the collaborative efforts between electricity and railway departments to ensure the successful implementation of the electrification projects.
The traction sub-stations in Tripura are expected to play a pivotal role in the state's transport infrastructure by reducing operational costs and cutting down on pollution. Electric trains, compared to diesel-powered ones, are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. They also promise a quieter and smoother travel experience for commuters, which is expected to boost public transport usage in the region.
In summary, the commissioning of the Teliamura traction sub-station marks a major milestone in Tripura’s railway electrification journey. Along with the Udaipur sub-station, it reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable development and modern transportation solutions. This initiative not only supports the operational efficiency of train services but also contributes to broader environmental and community benefits, positioning Tripura as a progressive state in embracing cleaner technologies in rail transport.
