Tezpur University has taken a significant step to accommodate its growing international student population by inaugurating the newly constructed Nelson Mandela International Hostel. The inauguration took place on Monday, with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh presiding over the ceremony. The two-storey hostel marks a major development in the university’s infrastructure and commitment to providing quality living facilities for students from across the globe.

In its initial phase, the hostel offers 44 single-seater rooms, each thoughtfully designed to ensure comfort, privacy, and functionality for international students pursuing higher education at the university. The design reflects the institution’s focus on creating a conducive environment for academic pursuits while supporting personal well-being and independence. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the hostel will not only provide quality living spaces but also foster diversity and international collaboration on campus, thereby enhancing the university’s reputation as a global education destination.

Currently, Tezpur University hosts international students from 22 countries, including regions from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa, and Northern Europe. The Nelson Mandela International Hostel is part of a broader vision to accommodate this diverse student body and support intercultural learning. The hostel is named in honor of Nelson Mandela, the global icon of peace, equality, and justice, symbolizing inclusivity and the university’s commitment to cross-cultural harmony.

Future expansion plans have been envisioned for the hostel, which will increase its capacity to accommodate 140 international students. The extended facilities are planned to include an Activity Center and a Library. These additions will provide students with opportunities for cultural exchange, academic engagement, and community building, making the hostel not just a residence but a hub for interaction, learning, and personal growth. This initiative reflects Tezpur University’s commitment to creating holistic educational experiences that combine academic rigor with cultural and social development.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent university officials, including Prof. Manabendra Mandal, Dean of Students’ Welfare, and Mr. Jadab Chandra Nath, Executive Engineer, along with wardens and other staff. Their presence highlighted the collaborative effort and planning that went into designing and constructing the hostel to meet international standards and expectations.

On the same day, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Singh also inaugurated a newly constructed unisex salon named LAVANYA on campus. This modern facility is intended to enhance lifestyle amenities for students, staff, and the wider campus community. The salon, like the hostel, reflects the university’s focus on improving the quality of campus life by providing facilities that support well-being, convenience, and modern living standards.

Overall, the inauguration of the Nelson Mandela International Hostel represents a landmark achievement for Tezpur University. It addresses the immediate needs of international students while providing room for future growth and expansion. By combining quality living spaces, cultural engagement opportunities, and facilities for academic and personal development, the university is strengthening its position as a premier institution in the region for global education. The hostel serves as a tangible manifestation of Tezpur University’s mission to provide inclusive, world-class education and foster an environment of intercultural collaboration and harmony. With these initiatives, the university not only improves its infrastructure but also enhances its role as a destination for students from around the world
