Perplexity has rolled out a significant update to its iOS app, introducing a new AI voice assistant designed to make daily tasks more seamless for iPhone users. This update marks a major milestone for the company, bringing to iOS a feature that was previously available only on Android devices since its launch in January.

The newly introduced AI voice assistant can perform a variety of functions, such as setting reminders, composing emails, booking tables at restaurants, and more. One of the standout features of the update is that users can now continue voice conversations with the AI even when the app is running in the background. This allows for a more natural and uninterrupted user experience.

However, Perplexity’s iOS voice assistant still lacks some advanced features seen in competitors like Gemini, such as screen or live camera sharing capabilities. While users can share images with the app and ask questions based on them, live camera input is not yet supported.

To unlock the full potential of the voice assistant, users must grant the app the necessary permissions. Once enabled, the AI can perform multi-app actions, including booking rides via third-party services like Uber. On iPhones equipped with an Action button, users can customize it to launch the AI assistant directly, eliminating the need to open the app each time.

Despite the breadth of its capabilities, the voice assistant cannot yet handle some system-level functions due to iOS’s strict permission architecture. For those tasks, users must continue to rely on Apple’s built-in assistant, Siri. It’s worth noting that Siri is also set to receive a significant upgrade as part of Apple’s forthcoming “Apple Intelligence” initiative for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Perplexity's voice assistant also integrates with default Apple apps. For instance, when asked to play music or send an email, it defaults to Apple Music and Apple Mail respectively. Additionally, the assistant can now access real-time information, including content from YouTube, podcasts, and other digital media platforms, enhancing its ability to deliver current and relevant information.

All of these new features are available to users on the free tier, although their usage is capped at five messages at a time. Those looking for unrestricted access can subscribe to Perplexity’s Plus plan, priced at $20 per month, which offers unlimited use of the AI voice assistant.

Overall, Perplexity's latest update brings its iOS app closer to becoming a full-fledged AI assistant, much like Siri, with the added benefit of real-time data access and multi-app integration. Although it still has some limitations—particularly regarding system-level control and live camera input—the new voice assistant is a substantial step forward in providing iPhone users with a powerful, conversational AI tool for managing everyday tasks.
