The Twipra Student Federation (TSF), a prominent indigenous student organization affiliated with the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), has formally demanded the replacement of the current Director of the Tribal Welfare Department in Tripura with a qualified tribal officer. TSF argues that appointing a tribal officer to lead the department will significantly enhance its operational efficiency and also serve as an important morale booster for aspiring tribal civil servants, encouraging greater representation and leadership within the government.

TSF submitted a detailed memorandum to Bikash Debbarma, the Tribal Welfare Minister of Tripura, emphasizing that the Tribal Welfare Department’s primary responsibility is the welfare, upliftment, and development of the indigenous tribal communities of Tripura. Given this focused mission, TSF believes it is only just and fair that the leadership of such a critical department be entrusted to an officer who not only belongs to the tribal community but also deeply understands the unique cultural, social, and developmental challenges these communities face. Such intrinsic understanding is seen as essential for the effective administration and implementation of welfare policies aimed at tribal development.

The memorandum further articulates TSF’s conviction that the state cadre has several competent and experienced tribal officers who possess the necessary administrative skills and grassroots knowledge to lead the department more effectively than the current leadership. TSF stresses that replacing the incumbent Director with a deserving tribal officer would not only improve the department’s efficiency but also act as an inspiration and encouragement for tribal youths aspiring to civil services, thereby enhancing tribal representation in governance.

TSF strongly urged for the immediate replacement of the current Director and insisted that a qualified tribal officer be appointed to this key position without delay. The organization believes that such a move would be a positive reflection of the government’s commitment to genuine tribal empowerment and representation in crucial administrative roles. They highlighted that entrusting a tribal leader with the department’s helm would reinforce the government’s dedication to safeguarding tribal interests and promoting inclusive governance.

The memorandum concluded by expressing hope that the government would give due consideration to their demands and take necessary and timely action. TSF’s demands underline a broader call for increased tribal participation in decision-making roles that directly affect their communities, promoting equity, cultural sensitivity, and sustainable development within Tripura’s tribal welfare framework.

In summary, TSF’s campaign to have a qualified tribal officer appointed as the Director of the Tribal Welfare Department is grounded in the belief that such leadership would yield better administrative outcomes, foster tribal empowerment, and strengthen the department’s ability to address the socio-economic challenges faced by tribal populations in Tripura. This move also seeks to inspire tribal youth and affirm their rightful place in the state’s civil administration, thus advancing the cause of tribal welfare in a comprehensive and inclusive manner.
