On May 23, 2025, the Government of Nagaland achieved a significant milestone in its energy infrastructure development with the inauguration of the 2.4 MW Duilumroi Hydro Electric Project at Poilwa Village in Peren District. The inauguration ceremony was led by Nagaland’s Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs, K.G. Kenye. In his address, Minister Kenye applauded the Power Department officials and contractors for their efficient and timely completion of the project. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to the communities of Poilwa and Heunambe villages for their cooperation and support throughout the process. Additionally, Kenye extended his gratitude to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the State Government for providing consistent financial support that helped in the successful execution of the project.
The project was initiated under the State Plan with a budget of ₹40.29 crore. It began construction in April 2021 with an expected completion timeline of 36 months. According to Chief Engineer (T&G), Er. Kasho Chishi, the project was technically commissioned on December 11, 2024, indicating that the project adhered closely to its original schedule. The completion of the hydroelectric project was made possible due to the timely release of funds and coordination between various departments and stakeholders.
During the inauguration ceremony, several key officials delivered remarks highlighting the significance of the project and the need for environmental sustainability. Power Secretary Asangla, IAS, emphasized the importance of protecting the catchment area and forest cover, essential components for the long-term sustainability and efficiency of the hydroelectric project. She urged nearby villages to cooperate in afforestation efforts and participate actively in the maintenance of the hydro infrastructure.
Retired Chief Engineer (T&G), Er. Penrithung Yanthan, also spoke at the event, describing the project as a remarkable achievement. He expressed his appreciation for the determination and collaborative spirit of all stakeholders who overcame logistical and technical challenges to complete the project successfully.
The event was organized and chaired by Chief Engineer (D&R), Er. Nitovi A. Wotsa. The ceremony began with an invocation by Pastor Kwedigwambe Zeliang of the Baptist Church in Poilwa Village. A detailed technical report was presented by Additional Chief Engineer (Civil), Er. Visakho Therie, outlining the project's scope, challenges, and implementation strategies. The vote of thanks was delivered by Additional Chief Engineer (D&R), Er. R. Lobosang Jamir, who acknowledged the efforts of the engineering team, contractors, local leaders, and community members.
The Duilumroi Hydro Electric Project is expected to provide clean and reliable energy to the surrounding regions, thus significantly contributing to Nagaland’s power supply. It also reflects the State Government’s broader vision of sustainable development through renewable energy sources. The project sets a precedent for future hydroelectric projects in the state, demonstrating the feasibility of utilizing local resources and community collaboration to achieve infrastructure goals.
