At the recent NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting held in New Delhi, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized the urgent need for urban expansion in the state. He highlighted that nearly 80 percent of Mizoram’s population resides in its capital city, Aizawl, resulting in severe congestion and overpopulation. To address this issue, the Chief Minister proposed the development of a new city in Thenzawl, located in Serchhip district approximately 93 kilometers from Aizawl. According to Lalduhoma, the new urban center could potentially accommodate between 10 to 15 lakh people, thereby significantly reducing the demographic pressure on Aizawl.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister outlined various state government initiatives aimed at economic development and social welfare. Among them was the 'Bana Kaih' scheme, a flagship financial assistance program that provides collateral-free loans of up to ₹50 lakh. Beneficiaries under this scheme are also eligible for an interest subvention of up to 100 percent, making it highly attractive for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Lalduhoma mentioned that several other welfare schemes have been introduced, particularly targeting entrepreneurship, and competitions are being organized to discover and encourage local innovation.

Focusing on economic growth and employment, Lalduhoma spoke about Mizoram's improved investment environment. He revealed that the state has revamped its investment policy to make it more investor-friendly. A significant component of this strategy includes the strengthening of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by establishing direct linkages with industries. This approach is expected to boost skill development and ensure that vocational education aligns with the needs of the job market.

On employment statistics, the Chief Minister shared that Mizoram currently has a low unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. He also emphasized that 45 percent of the workforce comprises women, highlighting the state’s inclusive approach to development. Lalduhoma reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting sports and youth engagement by launching the ‘Empowering Mizoram Sports’ scheme. This program aims to establish coaching and talent development centers throughout the state, nurturing young athletes and encouraging physical fitness.

He proudly announced that Mizoram had recently been declared a fully literate state, underscoring the success of its education policies and the high literacy rate among its citizens. The Chief Minister concluded by acknowledging ongoing collaborations under the NITI Aayog’s State Support Missions. He stated that all departments in the Mizoram government have been directed to prepare and submit action plans contributing toward the national objective of making India a developed country by the year 2047.

Overall, the Chief Minister’s address reflected Mizoram’s proactive approach to tackling urban challenges, enhancing economic opportunities, empowering women and youth, and aligning state initiatives with national development goals. His proposal to build a new city and the focus on policy reforms, investment promotion, and human capital development demonstrated a comprehensive strategy to ensure sustainable growth in Mizoram.
