The Innovation North East (NE) Week 2025 kicked off on Monday with a strong focus on Nagaland’s growing capabilities in innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. The event’s opening session highlighted the state’s immense potential to contribute significantly to India’s broader digital transformation goals.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), delivered the keynote address virtually. He praised Nagaland for its impressive progress in sectors such as food processing, tourism, and services. According to an official press release, Krishnan noted that Nagaland has a pool of skilled individuals whose talents can be promoted not just regionally but on a global scale. This recognition of local talent is key to the state’s ambition to play a bigger role in the digital economy.
Krishnan emphasized the strategic importance of the Northeastern region, particularly Nagaland, in India’s digital economy. He pointed out that the region benefits from a large number of youth proficient in English, which gives it a competitive edge. He stressed that equipping these young people with modern digital skills is critical not only for their personal growth but as a vital investment in the future of India as a whole. He also highlighted the central government’s commitment to inclusive digital empowerment, pointing out that 20 out of the 55 National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) centers across India are located in the Northeast, reflecting the government’s focus on capacity building in the region.
A significant part of the day’s proceedings was the signing of three important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), which aim to strengthen the startup ecosystem, foster grassroots innovation, and enhance capacity building in Nagaland and the broader Northeast.
The first MoU was between NIELIT Kohima and Vignan TBI, a partnership focused on providing incubation support and better market access for entrepreneurs in the Northeast. This collaboration is expected to create a nurturing environment for startups to flourish.
The second MoU was signed between NIELIT Kohima and SPJIMR Mumbai. This partnership aims to boost institutional mentorship and provide capacity-building programs tailored for regional startups. The collaboration intends to equip local entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, and networks required to succeed in competitive markets.
The third MoU was inked between NIELIT Kohima and ACIC IIT (ISM) Foundation, Dhanbad. This alliance seeks to promote community-based entrepreneurship and strengthen local innovation capabilities. By encouraging innovation rooted in local contexts and community needs, this partnership hopes to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development in the region.
Overall, the Innovation NE Week 2025 opened with a clear vision: to leverage Nagaland’s emerging strengths and position the state as a key player in India’s digital and entrepreneurial landscape. Through government support, strategic partnerships, and capacity building, the event marked an important step toward realizing the digital ambitions of the Northeast region. The focus on youth empowerment, grassroots innovation, and startup incubation reflects a comprehensive approach to regional development that can inspire similar initiatives across the country.
