M. Asnikumar Singh, former Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority and senior spokesperson of the BJP Manipur unit, met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, at his official residence in New Delhi to discuss vital infrastructure initiatives aimed at promoting peace, enhancing connectivity, and accelerating economic growth in the state of Manipur. The meeting was of strategic importance as it focused on comprehensive development plans, particularly in regions that are underserved and affected by difficult terrain.

The discussion centered on a detailed proposal submitted by Singh, which addressed long-standing connectivity challenges in the Thanga constituency and nearby areas. These areas include Arong Tera, Laphupat, Komlakhong, and parts of Bishnupur, Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal districts. These regions have historically suffered from poor infrastructure and inaccessibility due to their challenging geography.

Key highlights of Singh’s proposal include the expansion and upgradation of the Moirang–Thanga Road, a corridor of high strategic and civilian significance. The road plays a vital role in local transport and access, especially in the socio-economically important Moirang Sub-division. Another critical aspect of the plan is the construction of a new bridge over Loktak Lake, aimed at connecting the regions of Mukap, Mandha, and Chingthi. This initiative is intended to enhance inter-regional mobility and reduce travel time for residents and tourists alike.

A third and perhaps the most significant component of the proposal is the integration of a 37-kilometre road stretch into National Highway-2 (NH-2). This move is expected to enhance the strategic importance of the region on a national scale and improve trade and logistical links between Manipur and other parts of India.

Singh emphasized that the implementation of this project would have a transformative impact on Thanga and the surrounding areas. Key benefits outlined include improved transportation and connectivity, promotion of eco and heritage tourism, and growth in hospitality and service industries. Furthermore, the proposal aims to generate sustainable livelihood opportunities, particularly for youth and rural communities, thereby contributing to long-term socio-economic stability.

He also mentioned that the proposal aligns well with the Government of India’s Act East Policy, which seeks to enhance inter-state and sub-regional connectivity across national and international trade corridors in the Indo-Pacific region.

Union Minister Gadkari responded positively to the proposal. He acknowledged its critical importance and instructed his ministry officials to evaluate it promptly under the External Assistance Programme (EAP). He further assured Singh of the Centre’s full support for its implementation.

The proposal has already gained traction at the state level, having received endorsement from the former Chief Minister of Manipur and the state’s Minister of Public Works. The Public Works Department (PWD) Secretariat initiated preliminary action in January 2025 by directing the Chief Engineer to prepare a Concept Note and a Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Overall, the initiative represents a strategic intervention aimed at not only improving infrastructure but also fostering peace, economic resilience, and regional integration in Manipur.
