On the occasion of World Environment Day, three prominent organisations in Manipur—All Manipur United Clubs' Organization (AMUCO), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), and Thangmeiband United Club—collaborated to launch a large-scale reforestation campaign in Imphal West district. The event marked a shift from symbolic gestures to concrete environmental action, aiming to address climate change and ecological degradation through community-led efforts.

The campaign began with the plantation of approximately 300 saplings around the Cheiraoching foothills in Thangmeiband. Organisers have ambitious plans to scale up the effort, intending to plant over 2,000 additional trees at higher elevations in the coming weeks. The strategic selection of Cheiraoching was influenced by its ecological significance, with its varied elevations offering a suitable environment for diverse tree species. This diversity is expected to enhance the region’s environmental resilience and long-term sustainability.

During the tree plantation drive, Hijam Roshan, President of the Manipuri Students' Federation, emphasised the critical role trees play in mitigating climate change and preserving ecological balance. He highlighted the importance of long-term commitment and follow-up care for the saplings, stating that successful reforestation extends well beyond just planting trees. Roshan also criticized ongoing commercial tree felling practices, which continue to pose a threat to Manipur’s fragile ecosystems.

The event saw the participation of key figures such as Dr. Norendro Thokchom, Vice-President of AMUCO, Pratap Leishangthem, Secretary General of AMUCO, and Sundar Khuman, General Secretary of MSF. Their presence underscored the united front presented by the organisations, as well as their dedication to environmental conservation. Dozens of volunteers from across Imphal West actively took part in the day-long activity, further exemplifying community involvement and ownership in the campaign.

The higher elevation areas targeted for future plantation will be home to species adapted to different climate conditions, enabling better adaptation and survival rates. These trees are expected to act as a buffer against the effects of climate change, while also promoting biodiversity.

Environmental degradation has become an increasingly urgent concern across Manipur. Rampant deforestation, urban expansion, and climate variability have led to loss of biodiversity, water shortages, and soil erosion. In this context, the community-led plantation initiative serves as a proactive measure to restore ecological balance.

The three organisations stressed the need for effective policy enforcement and continued collective action to protect Manipur’s natural resources. They argued that while government intervention is crucial, grassroots participation and public awareness are equally important for achieving long-term conservation goals.
