Green Mizoram Day was celebrated across the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram on Wednesday, June 11, reaffirming the state’s strong commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Since its inception in 1999, Green Mizoram Day has become an annual tradition aimed at promoting afforestation and raising environmental awareness among the people of the state. This year’s theme, “Plant trees and catch the rain,” underscores the essential connection between tree plantation, rainwater conservation, and ecosystem resilience.
The central celebration took place in Thenzawl town in Serchhip district, where the state’s Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister, Lalthansanga, presided over the main function. In his address, the minister highlighted the crucial environmental benefits trees provide, such as conserving groundwater, preventing soil erosion, improving air quality, and preserving biodiversity. He urged the public to actively participate in the initiative and work together to protect and conserve Mizoram’s rich natural ecosystem. Emphasizing community involvement, he called on citizens to take up tree planting as a collective responsibility and long-term investment in the planet’s health.
To mark the occasion, mass ceremonial tree plantation drives were organized across all districts of the state. Various official functions were held in district headquarters, with active participation from government departments, schools, NGOs, and local communities. These efforts were not just symbolic but aimed at achieving measurable environmental impact.
Adding to the significance of the day, Governor General (Retired) Vijay Kumar Singh and his wife Bharti Singh also participated in the celebration by planting a sapling of the state tree, ‘Hershe’, at the Raj Bhavan premises. The Governor expressed concern about the rapid pace of climate change and emphasized the importance of ramping up afforestation initiatives to combat global warming. He noted that such efforts not only help mitigate climate risks but also promote ecological balance and enhance the state’s green cover.
The state government officials reported that since the beginning of Green Mizoram Day in 1999, more than 46 lakh (4.6 million) trees have been planted throughout Mizoram. These plantations have contributed significantly to improving the forest cover, reducing carbon emissions, enhancing rainfall absorption, and supporting local flora and fauna. Mizoram, which is known for its lush green hills and forests, continues to be one of the forerunners in India in environmental protection efforts.
Green Mizoram Day serves not only as a reminder of the environmental challenges posed by deforestation and climate change but also as a rallying point for unified state action to protect and nurture the environment. It aims to instill eco-consciousness among citizens, especially the youth, and encourage long-term ecological stewardship.
The success and scale of this year’s event once again reflected the deep-rooted environmental ethos of the people of Mizoram and the state’s proactive approach to addressing climate issues. The government’s continued dedication to environmental causes, along with the active involvement of the public, underscores Mizoram’s commitment to creating a sustainable and greener future for generations to come.
