The Meghalaya government has officially launched the Chitmang Chaiwat Nature-Based Glamping Project at Badri Rongdong in the South Garo Hills district, marking a significant step toward sustainable eco-tourism and community-driven development in the region. Alongside the inauguration, the state government has sanctioned an additional ₹93 lakh for the project’s expansion and further development.
Spread across over 21 hectares, the glamping (glamorous camping) initiative is designed to provide a high-quality, eco-friendly tourism experience while preserving the natural landscape and promoting the local Garo heritage. The project includes Garo-style cabins and eco-friendly dome structures, blending modern comfort with traditional design and sustainability.
The primary goals of the project are to:
-
Create employment opportunities for the local community
-
Promote environmental conservation
-
Enhance sustainable tourism in the region
-
Empower local stakeholders through active participation in tourism development
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who inaugurated the facility, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in achieving long-term and inclusive growth. He commended the Soil & Water Conservation Department for working closely with the local community to successfully implement the initiative. Sangma noted that the Chitmang Chaiwat Glamping Project exemplifies how nature, culture, and livelihoods can be harmoniously integrated when communities take the lead.
As part of the event, the Chief Minister also formally handed over the ₹93 lakh development grant to the Chitmang Chaiwat Management Committee, which will oversee the next phase of project development, ensuring local ownership and accountability.
Through this project, the Meghalaya government envisions turning the South Garo Hills into a tourism destination known for eco-conscious travel experiences that respect the local environment and heritage. It aligns with the broader state vision of encouraging low-impact, community-based tourism models that offer both economic and environmental benefits.
On his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, CM Sangma congratulated all the stakeholders involved, stating:
“Congratulations to the community and the Soil & Water Conservation Department for working together to complete this special project.”
This project sets an example for how government support, community engagement, and sustainable planning can come together to create a thriving eco-tourism model. It is expected to not only attract domestic and international tourists seeking nature-based experiences but also inspire similar initiatives across other parts of the state and northeast India.
