Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on June 18 that the state has embarked on a significant ₹1,800 crore project to modernize its power transmission infrastructure. This comprehensive upgrade aims to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and resilience of Tripura's power sector. One of the major highlights of the initiative is the planned introduction of advanced live-line maintenance technology, which will allow repairs on power transmission lines without the need to shut down power supply—ensuring uninterrupted electricity to consumers.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of a new 132 kV substation in Amarpur, located in the Gomati District. The newly commissioned substation is part of the larger modernization effort, which focuses on strengthening the state’s electricity grid and ensuring stability and sustainability in energy supply.
Minister Nath elaborated on the various components of the project aimed at improving the overall performance of the power department. These initiatives include:
Live-Line Maintenance Technology: This technology will enable engineers and technicians to conduct repair and maintenance work on high-voltage power lines without needing to cut off the electricity supply. This will minimize disruptions and enhance consumer satisfaction.
Rapid Response Repair System: Special attention is being given to setting up mechanisms that ensure swift repair of faults and breakdowns in the power supply, reducing downtime significantly.
Summer Load Management: Plans are underway to effectively handle increased pressure on the power grid during peak summer months, ensuring consistent supply even during high-demand periods.
Drone-Based Monitoring: The power department will utilize drone technology to monitor and detect faults in transmission tower lines. This will aid in efficient maintenance and preventive actions by identifying issues before they escalate into major problems.
Mobile Substations: The state will commission mobile substations that can be deployed quickly during emergencies, especially natural disasters, to prevent or minimize power outages. These mobile units will act as temporary alternatives when main substations are damaged or under maintenance.
These steps collectively aim to transform Tripura’s power infrastructure into a more robust and responsive system capable of meeting current and future energy demands. Minister Nath emphasized that the modernization project is being executed in close partnership with the Government of India and the World Bank. This collaboration brings both technical and financial support to the initiative, ensuring global best practices are implemented in the state's power sector.
The minister also expressed confidence that these efforts would significantly improve power reliability, promote economic development, and improve the quality of life for citizens across the state. He assured that Tripura is on the right path to becoming a model state in terms of power infrastructure and service delivery, with a strong focus on innovation and sustainability.
